When I try to download to another folder, Nicotine freezes, and I have to kill it and start over.

It's likely the problem is you are not running nicotine+ as root. Switch user and re-run Nicotine with the escalated privileges that it requires.

Running N+ as root is the worst advice you can give.

The source might indeed be a file permission problem though. If that's the case it shouldn't freeze up when you try to save to a folder that you are allowed to write in.

I try to save it in my home directory (of course). I don't even try anymore. For example, I started a movie, but I didn't dare try to download it to my video directory instead of the default music directory because saving to another directory usually freezes Nicotine. Yeah, I never run applications as root, thanks.

Alright, in that case please try running N+ from a console/terminal. It will probably show a stacktrace as soon as you try to download stuff to another directory.
